Bosnia’s blue mountains
The perfect mix of adrenaline and pleasure, relaxation and adventure: we go hiking and rafting, savour Bosnian cuisine and wines – and soak up the Bosnian way of life
Our small group tour of Bosnia and Herzegovina brings together the best of this heart-shaped country in the Balkans.
We enjoy unspoilt countryside and stunning views on our hikes, taste local wines and visit the most beautiful villages in Herzegovina – and of course Sarajevo and Mostar.
And, as with all our Bosnia tours, you’ll meet hospitable locals and get real local experiences that you won’t find on Google. Also always included: plenty of Mediterranean Bosnian ćejf — a real attitude to life.
In just 9 days, we’ll be travelling from the beautiful capital, Sarajevo, across the stunning Bjelašnica mountain massif to the wine lands of Herzegovina.
We’ll wander through the charming old town of Sarajevo, Baščaršija, and then we’ll hike to Lukomir, the loneliest village in Bosnia. We’ll also go rafting on Neretva, which is the coldest river in the world, and we’ll watch the bridge jumpers in Mostar. In Herzegovina, we’ll stroll through the country’s most beautiful villages and taste local wine.
This route is a perfect combination of adrenaline and leisure, nature and city. It is ideal for anyone visiting Bosnia and Herzegovina for the first time–or wanting to delve even deeper into the country, with a herb hike or a cuvée (wine making) workshop. And of course, there’s always plenty of Bosnian lifestyle – ćejf – to enjoy!
DAY 1: ARRIVAL | 2 NIGHTS IN SARAJEVO
Get ready to fall head over heels in love with Bosnia and Herzegovina! From the vibrant capital, Sarajevo, to the breathtaking peaks of Bjelašnica and the scenic hills of the Winelands, today you finally board your flight to Sarajevo.
After you’ve checked into your accommodation, you’ll have time to freshen up and take a first walk around the old town before we meet for a welcome drink in the Sarajevo institution Barhana in the evening. This will be a great opportunity to get to know each other and get in the mood for the week ahead.
DAY 2: SARAJEVO – SIGHTSEEING & GETTING TO KNOW THE CITY
You’ll meet in the morning to explore Sarajevo—see it, feel it, hear it and taste it on this gourmet city tour with Numa and Kathi. In three to four hours,
Then, in the afternoon, you’ll have some free time to explore the local mountain, Trebević, visit some museums, or just sit back and soak up the atmosphere of the old town. And don’t miss the sunset from the Yellow Bastion – it’s an amazing sight!
DAY 3: HIKE TO LUKOMIR | 2 NIGHTS UMOLJANI
From the village Umoljano on Mt. Bjelašnica, our itineray takes us on a two-and-a-half hour hike across the enchanting Studeni Potok plain and along the second-deepest canyon in Europe, the Rakitnica Canyon. We end in Lukomir, the most remote mountain village in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
In Lukomir, you will meet the people who still live as they did hundreds of years ago—farming, sheepherding and handicrafts. You will enjoy a typical Bosnian lunch—homemade from fresh, local ingredients.
It’s then a 2.5 hour hike back to Umoljani where we will spend the night.
DAY 4: HERBAL HIKE ON BJELAŠNICA
Today’s herbal hike with Arma Beslagić takes us to the Studeni Potok wetland, which we crossed yesterday. Today you will see it again with completely different eyes: Arma, who moved with her family from the city to the mountains, will explain how to identify edible and medicinal plants and what they are used for.
We finish the six-kilometre walk with a shared lunch—using local herbs, of course!
You can spend the evening in the village of Umoljani, walking around and enjoying typical Bosnian cuisine in one of the restaurants.
DAY 5: NERETVA RAFTING | 3 NIGHTS IN MOSTAR
Today we’re taking to the water! After breakfast, we set off to raft down the Neretva River from Glavatičevo. The canyon of the coldest river in the world is a fascinating little ecosystem of tributaries, waterfalls and wild nature through which we sail on the turquoise blue water. The five- to seven-hour trip includes lunch and takes you through parts of the Neretva that are completely untouched by man.
And for those who are not entirely comfortable on the water, we can reassure you: All skippers are licensed and experts in wild waters. The equipment (neoprene suits, life jackets, helmets) is certified by authorised institutes and is replaced every year.
The tour then continues to Mostar — where the evening is at your leisure.
DAY 6: EXPLORE THE MEDITERRANEAN HERZEGOVINA
Today’s theme? Waterfalls and wine glasses! The landscape of Herzegovina is very different from the lush nature of Sutjeska, but just as beautiful. You will enjoy the rivers of this karst region and taste the delicious wines that nature has in store for us.
The day is reserved for some of the most beautiful sights in Herzegovina:
And because all this sightseeing will make you hungry and thirsty, we have prepared a lunch stop at a local boutique winery, serving not only delicious local cheeses and hams, but also the only Bosnian Brut made from local grapes!
In the evening, we will visit a fourth generation boutique winery where we will enjoy a barbecue dinner, mix our own wine, bottle it, cork it and write our names on the label to take home as the perfect souvenir!
DAY 7: FROM MOSTAR TO SARAJEVO I 2 NIGHTS IN SARAJEVO
We have arranged a late checkout for you today, so that you can enjoy a morning stroll around Mostar. In the early afternoon, we’ll head back to Sarajevo via the Fortica lookout, stopping off in Jablanica.
Here we will enjoy a late lunch and, if you wish, you can try the lamb on the spit for which the region is famous.
DAY 8: FAREWELL DINNER IN SARAJEVO
Today you will have free time in Sarajevo in the morning, which you can spend shopping for souvenirs, visiting museums or simply relaxing.
We will meet again in the afternoon for a farewell dinner. Together we will prepare a typical Bosnian Sač, where we will toast to new friendships and a successful trip. If you wish, you can end the trip with the group at the Sarajevo Brewery.
DAY 9: DEPARTURE
Today it’s time to say goodbye to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Or rather, until next time. Because we’re sure you’ve fallen head over heels in love with this little heart-shaped country. And that you’re probably already planning your return!
After the transfer to the airport, it is time to head home.
