Tour description

Enjoy the most beautiful sunset over the rooftops of Sarajevo – with a Bosnian picnic of fresh, fragrant Somun bread, local cheese and salami, fresh fruit and vegetables and Bosnian craft beer or wine. Sounds like the perfect way to end the day, doesn’t it?

Before the well-deserved picnic, however, we first head up high. From Sarajevo’s main market, Baščaršija, you start your hike to the neighbourhoods of Kovači and Vratnik – two of Sarajevo’s oldest neighbourhoods. You can peek into the shop of a coppersmith and walk through the old city gates of Sarajevo, past a true lost place – an old barracks from Austro-Hungarian times – up to the yellow and white fortress that towered over the city and warned of invaders centuries ago!

On the walk, new, wonderful vistas and views open up around every corner, and you wander past old houses, catching a glimpse into the lives of Sarajevo’s inhabitants today.

At a secret view point, you can take a break and enjoy your picnic, before you start your descent together again as night falls. The walk ends where it began, at Sarajevo’s main market.

Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a water bottle. There will be opportunities to refill along the way. In summer, please remember sunscreen and a hat.

Don’t even think about what to do in Bosnia and book this wine tour. This was the highlight of our trip. The winemakers welcomed us into their homes and made us feel like friends, not only guests. We went to five different wineries and the wines were to die for. Everybody was so patient and generous and our guide Nermin had an extensive knowledge about wine and told us many funny anecdotes. A must when in Bosnia!

I loved this tour! Our guide, Numa, was super nice and explained about the wine culture and wines in Hercegovina and we learned even more from the wine makers that were present at all the wine farms we went to and open to answer all our questions!

We tried a wide range of different wines, in some places straight from the barrel, which was a truly unique experience. I loved to learn more about our own autochthonous grape varieties Zilavka and Blatina too! And of course, all wine tastings were complimented by mezze – local specialties like cheeses and cured meats. The dinner between the wine barrels was my food highlight of the day – all locally sourced and produced!

My true highlight though was to make my own wine blend at one of the wineries! After learning everything about character, taste, acids, and all different kind of things about wine we could create our own blend from different red wines, cork the bottle and take it home. I cannot wait to try it with my friends!

I am Bosnian but I didn’t know anything about Bosnian wine and I took the tour because a friend of mine really wanted to go. I am glad I came. I learned so much about our wine from Nermin and visited places and vineyards I didn’t even know about. Plus, our group was really nice, we were all friends after the tour and shared photos and videos with each other.

It was a sensational weekend! We had the best time becoming acquainted with Bosnian wines, tasting tantalising vintages and to top it all off we all enjoyed a dinner amongst the wine barrels at the end of the first day. Our hosts, Nermin and Kathrin, were fantastic: friendly, funny and super accommodating and made us all feel comfortable. They have a great dynamic with the all the people they work with and it shows which makes the experience feel laid back and natural. We loved talking about wine, the history of the country, the culture and all the interesting and fun facts that we learnt. We cannot wait to open our own personalised bottle of wine, which we made on the tour, and share it with our friends. We highly recommend this experience of lifetime!

This is by far the best tourist tour I was part of. Great people, amazing guides with lots of fun facts about wine, grapes and stuff pertinent to the tour.
All wineries went out big with the food and wines and on this tour I tried most amazing wines in my life.

We tried numerous sorts of wine and rakija, starting with world’s first sparkling wine made of Žilavka, grape sort that is autochthonous to the Herzegovina region..
At one winery (Marijanović), we had a chance to make our own cuvee, blend of three sorts of red grapes, which was very fun activity to do.
At every winery except the wine, there was also food which was mostly sourced from locals and complimented wine perfectly. At every winery there was a short tour of the winery itself, where a person from winery showed us around and explained stuff about grapes and winemaking.

All in all, this was very fun tour which I’d recommend to everyone, from big wine aficionados, to people who usually don’t drink it.
