Hiking in Bosnia and Herzegovina: The most spectacular hiking routes

Bosnia and Herzegovina is a true paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. The country offers an incredible variety of landscapes – from rugged mountain ranges to dense forests and picturesque glacial lakes, or the Via Dinarica, one of Europe’s most spectacular long-distance hiking routes, which crosses Bosnia from west to east.

But even off this route, there are numerous hiking trails that offer impressive nature and breathtaking views – for beginners as well as experienced hikers.

Why hike in Bosnia?

Although the country is one of Europe’s lesser-known hiking regions, this is precisely its greatest advantage. There are hardly any crowded trails here; instead, hikers can expect virtually untouched nature with a unique biodiversity. Places like the Perućica primeval forest in Sutjeska National Park or the mountain village of Lukomir are true highlights for a hiking trip.

With a ranger or self-guided?

The Bosnian mountains are beautiful, but can also be challenging. Incomplete trail markings, sudden changes in weather, and challenging terrain make some routes challenging. Those who want to enjoy nature in a carefree way while learning more about the region should consider a guided hike.

Here you will find various hiking tours with experienced guides who can give you a great insight into the country, its people and its culture.

The seven best hikes in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Prenj – The “Bosnian Himalayas”

Prenj is considered one of the most beautiful, yet also most challenging, mountains in Bosnia. Its rugged peaks, dense forests, and deep gorges are reminiscent of an alpine dream landscape. The hike to Zelena Glava, the highest peak in the massif (2,155 m), is challenging but rewarding with an incomparable panorama. Interested? Then feel free to contact us.

Hajdučka Vrata – Blidinje Nature Park

A geological wonder: The natural rock arch Hajdučka Vrata stands at an altitude of 2,000 meters and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks. The hike begins in the Blidinje Nature Park and leads through spectacular alpine scenery.

Maglić – The highest peak of Bosnia

At 2,386 meters, Maglić is Bosnia’s highest peak and one of the country’s most spectacular hikes. The ascent usually begins in Sutjeska National Park and leads along steep paths to the summit. One of the most beautiful routes runs along the picturesque Trnovačko Lake, whose emerald-green waters blend perfectly with the surrounding mountain scenery.

Sutjeska National Park offers many other hiking routes. For example, from the Prijevor viewpoint, you can also hike to Lake Trnovacko in Montenegro . A hike to Zelengora is also recommended—the “green mountain” with its eight lakes is ideal even for families with children.

Perućica Primeval Forest – Europe’s last wilderness

This dense forest in Sutjeska National Park is one of Europe’s last remaining primeval forests. Trees here are several hundred years old, some up to 50 meters tall. Particularly worth seeing is the 75-meter-high Skakavac Waterfall, which plunges spectacularly from a cliff face. Because the Perućica Primeval Forest is a strictly protected area, it can only be explored with a ranger—in fact, only 16 people per day are allowed down to the waterfall. You can book your hike here.

Bjelašnica – Olympic heritage and the loneliest village in Bosnia

Bjelašnica is not only interesting for skiers, but also offers some of the best hiking opportunities in the country – and it’s only about an hour away from the capital, Sarajevo. Particularly popular is the route to the village of Lukomir , the highest mountain village in Bosnia, located right on the edge of the Rakitnica Canyon. Time seems to have stood still here – traditional stone houses, local flocks of sheep, and authentic mountain culture make the hike a special experience.

Trebević – Sarajevo’s local mountain

Just minutes from the capital, Trebević offers the perfect opportunity for a day trip. Those who want to skip the climb can take the cable car from Sarajevo and then climb to the summit on well-marked trails. At the top, hikers will be treated to spectacular views of the city and the remains of the old 1984 Olympic bobsleigh track, which has since become a popular photo opportunity. A guided tour offers even more insight into Olympia .

Via Dinarica – The multi-day adventure

This long-distance hiking route is a highlight for anyone who wants to explore Bosnia on foot. It leads through some of the country’s most spectacular landscapes and connects national parks, mountain ranges, and traditional villages. Want to take a long-distance hike along the Via Dinarica? We’re happy to help you plan it !
