What to expect

On a relaxed walk through Sarajevo's old town, your guide introduces you to the history of rakija—the classic fruit brand of the Balkans—and Bosnian drinking culture.

This tasting experience is far more than just a quick drink. You’ll visit two carefully selected local spots in Baščaršija. First, a historic restaurant that has been producing its own rakija since 1918, followed by a traditional kafana, a lively local bar where Sarajevans gather to drink, talk, and enjoy traditional music (tamburaši).

You’ll taste five different rakijas, including classics like šljivovica (plum), as well as other fruit varieties such as dunja (quince), kajsija (apricot), or višnja (cherry) liqueur. And because rakija is never enjoyed on its own, every stop includes local mezze (small snacks) and stories about Sarajevo to accompany the tasting.

This is not a touristy bar crawl. Our small groups allow us to visit authentic places loved by locals, learn about Bosnian culture, enjoy local bites, and experience the relaxed spirit of ćejf together.

Good to know

Is this a bar crawl?
No. This is a cultural tasting experience, focused on rakija, local traditions, and authentic places in Sarajevo rather than partying. This tour is a chance to connect with locals and learn how to drink rakija properly.

Do I need to like strong alcohol?
Rakija can be strong, but the tasting includes different styles and flavors — from classic plum brandy to fruit liqueurs — and is always accompanied by food. To properly enjoy rakija and its flavors, the tasting samples are sipped, there is no need to rush your drink.

Will there be food?
Yes. Both stops include a selection of local mezze, as it is customary to enjoy rakija together with small dishes and snacks.

Is the tour suitable for beginners?
Absolutely. You don’t need any prior knowledge of rakija. Your guide will explain the traditions, production, and cultural context. If you do not want to drink five rakijas, your guide will be happy to recommend you local wine or beer instead.

How much walking is involved?
The tour takes place in Sarajevo’s Old Town and involves a short, easy walk between stops.
