“Lakes of Zelengora” hike
The “Eyes of Mount Zelengora”, the lakes Gornje Bare and Donje Bare are real resting places for the soul – unspoilt and pristine. The hike there is easy and also suitable for children.
Your adventure begins with your arrival at the premises of our partner agency at around 8 am, where you will meet your hiking guide and driver. Together we set off for the Irish-inspired lush green meadows and rolling hills of Zelengora.
On the way to the “eyes of the mountain”, the Gornje Bare and Donje Bare lakes, we drive along the impressive Hrčavka Gorge, around 90 minutes to the starting point of the hike.
And then we’re off: only around 3.5 kilometres await you on the circular route to the hidden Gornje Bare Lake at the foot of Uglješin – with a bit of luck, you won’t have to share this peaceful place with anyone except your fellow hikers.
From the lake itself, there are incredible views of the green (and sometimes blueberry-studded blue or red) meadows of Zelengora, from which the lake takes its name, as well as the peaks of Planinica and Tovarnica.
After the short circular hike, continue on foot or by car to Donje Bare Lake. Surrounded by dense forests, green meadows and steep rock faces, this place is the former weekend retreat of Tito. Although the leader of Yugoslavia was never here himself, friends and supporters used to throw lavish parties here.
You can hike around the lake and perhaps watch the trout jump before continuing another 1.5 kilometres to the Borić viewpoint. From here, you have an unforgettable view of the highest peaks in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Maglić and Volujak, as well as the country’s last wilderness, the Perućica primeval forest. There is no better place to eat your packed lunch!
After lunch, we return to the agency, where the adventure comes to an end. If you have booked accommodation in Sutjeska National Park (we will be happy to book it for you!), your tour ends in Tjentište.
Please wear comfortable shoes and bring a refillable water bottle. In summer, please remember to bring sun cream and a hat.
Please note: The minimum group size is three people. We reserve the right to cancel tours that do not meet the minimum group size – except for private tours.
You want to book a private tour with friends or as a couple? This is also possible on request – just email us.
