What to expect
Only a few kilometres from the centre of Sarajevo, the nature of the Skakavac National Park swallows us up as we approach. In this protected park, we will start our circular hike, which will not only take you to one of the most beautiful waterfalls in Bosnia and Herzegovina, but also across blooming wildflower meadows, through fragrant forests and past impressive vistas.
Our guide will give you an insight into the flora and fauna of the national park and you will learn about the stories and legends surrounding Sarajevo’s mountains.
Our hike starts with a stop at the “7 springs” before we venture up the Bukovik mountain for about one and a half hours through mountain meadows and wooded areas. After the first half of our hike, there is an opportunity for a short breather here. Time to soak up the peace of the forest, the birdsong and the scent of the wilderness.
For the next part of our hike, we head downhill, sometimes more, sometimes less steeply, towards the Skakavac waterfall. The closer we get, the louder you hear the sound of the falling water – until we finally reach the viewing platform and you can catch your first glimpse of the natural wonder. Majestically, the waterfall plunges an impressive 98 metres into a small river.
Optional: When the path to the foot of the waterfall opens, we will lead you directly down, where you can feel the splashing spray on your face and the power of the water. Afterwards we walk for about 40 minutes back to our starting point of the hike.

Good to know
This is a walking/hiking experience on forest paths; some sections can be muddy or slippery after rain.
The route includes gentle uphill and downhill sections; it’s best suited for guests who are comfortable walking for a few hours.
Weather in the forest can feel cooler than in the city — bring an extra layer even in warmer months.
The waterfall is most impressive after rain and during spring, but the hike is enjoyable year-round (conditions permitting).
This is a nature experience, so facilities on the trail are limited — plan accordingly.
If you have knee issues, trekking poles can be helpful on the descent.
Private tours are usually the best option if you want a slower pace or more photo stops.
