Visočica Panoramic Hike
Where Bosnia meets Herzegovina. An hour from Sarajevo, a ridge above the Rakitnica canyon, with Lukomir small on the far rim and views that reach toward Montenegro on a clear day.
What to expect
A hike right along the ridge where Bosnia meets Herzegovina: this lesser-known hike blends the feeling of being in the middle of nowhere with glimpses of Bosnia's medieval past–and ends with a delicious local lunch.
Only ninety minutes from Sarajevo lies Visočica, part of the Bjelašnica massif and the mountain facing Lukomir from the other side of Rakitnica Canyon. Many tourists never get to see this side of Bjelašnica, so here is your chance.
During this full-day hike, you'll see stećci, our traditional medieval tombstones, the cube-shaped Biwak, and you'll glimpse Lukomir–right from the ridge where lush, green Bosnia turns into stony Herzegovina.
You choose your route—10 or 16 kilometres, at a steady elevation gain of 600 to 900 meters. You'll spend the day with our mountain guide Stefan, who grew up dreaming of showing visitors the more hidden mountains of his home country.
During this hike, you'll learn about the herbs growing on the Bosnian mountains and the life of the shepherds who've lived here for centuries. On a clear day, you will be lucky enough to see all the way to Montenegro and Sutjeska National Park from Vito—one of Visočica's peaks at almost 2,000 meters.
And of course, your adventure ends with a delicious local lunch.
This hike is a private experience, only for you and your group. This allows you to go at your own pace and enjoy Bjelašnica to the fullest.
