Day by day itinerary

INCLUDED MEALS: WELCOME DRINKS

Are you ready to fall in love with Bosnia and Herzegovina? From the valley of Sarajevo to the towering mountains of Sutjeska National Park and the rolling Tuscany-like wine lands?

Today, you finally board your flight to Sarajevo – Bosnia’s capital city, full of alleys in which old craftsmen still work like they did hundreds of years ago and where the smell of grilled meats wafts through the cobblestoned streets.

After checking into your accommodation, we’ll give you a moment to rest and freshen up before we all meet up for welcome drinks and a dinner in the evening, setting the tone for the week ahead.

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST, FOOD TASTING

You meet in the morning to explore Sarajevo – see it, feel it, hear it, and taste it on this gourmet walking tour with Numa and Kathi. In three to four hours, you will:

  • Learn about the four religions that have been calling this city home for centuries
  • Learn why Sarajevo is also called “the meeting point of cultures”
  • Savour a special type of Baklava that you will not find anyhwere outside Bosnia or even Sarajevo
  • Stroll through the Ottoman old town with its bazar, inns and mosques
  • Wander through the Austro-Hungarian part of town with its beautifully decorated buildings and churches
  • Visit the place where history was made and WWI started
  • Meet a 4th generation coppersmith who keeps this old Sarajevo craft alive
  • Learn how to drink Bosnian coffee and why the coffee culture is the backbone of our society
  • Taste locally-made cheeses and cured meats at the local market place

In the evening, we would recommend you enjoy the sunset over the city from the Yellow Fortress, and we will equip you with a list of restaurants and bars to end the night in.

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER

Trust us, the early morning wake-up call is worth it! Once you see the towering, forest-covered mountains of Sutjeska National Park approaching, you won’t need another coffee to feel alive and awake!

We are easing into it today with two very easy hikes of around 30 minutes that take us to two of the most peaceful, serene lookouts of probably the whole country – and with a bit of luck, we won’t have to share them with anyone else!

In between the two light hikes, we will take a lunch break at Donje Bare Lake on the terrace of what once used to be Tito’s villa. Trust us when we say: Maybe raving parties were celebrated here during Yugoslav times – but now it’s so peaceful you can actually hear the trouts jumping out of the lake to catch some flies!

We have dinner together after this eventful day and then hit the hay early to be ready for the longer hike tomorrow!

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST, LUNCH, DINNER

Have you ever crossed a country border by foot? Yes, we thought so – but today is the day! We lace our hiking boots for a 10-kilometer hike that takes us from Sutjeska National Park along a scenic route to Piva National Park in Montenegro. All the way, we are surrounded by the towering high mountain massif of Maglić, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s highest peak. We make our way through beautiful meadows and end by Trnovačko Lake – an oasis of peace, and in this case, it’s not only empty words.

We enjoy a lunch there before we make the hike back to our starting point – where we will hopefully arrive right in time for sunset – a stunning sight with Maglić shining in orange, yellow and purple! After the eventful day, we enjoy dinner together at our accommodation.

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST

We leave Sutjeska National Park behind today and make our way to Mostar – the gem of Herzegovina. We arrive around lunchtime, and after check-in you have time for a leisurely stroll over the UNESCO-listed Stari Most and through the old town. Enjoy lunch in one of the restaurants we recommend, before we meet up again for a city tour with our local guide who will give you a deeper insight into the city’s history and the present – a time when reconciliation is happening slowly.

We then continue up to the Fortica viewpoint from where you can soak in the views of Mostar and the surrounding hills – maybe you are brave enough to try the zipline too? But even if not: Rest assured that the sunset view over Mostar is one of a kind!

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST, WINE TASTINGS, DINNER

We are off chasing waterfalls & wine glasses today! The Herzegovinian landscape is a stark difference to the lush nature of Sutjeska but just as beautiful. You’ll enjoy the rivers of this karst region and taste the delicious wines nature is providing for us.

After breakfast, we head for a morning swim to the most beautiful waterfall of the Herzegovina region: Kravica waterfalls. And because swimming makes you hungry and thirsty we have prepared a lunch stop at a local boutique winery where they don’t only serve delicious local cheese and ham but also the only Bosnian brut made from local grapes!

The afternoon is reserved for some of the most beautiful sights of the Herzegovina region:

  • Climb up to the viewpoint over the stunning Ottoman village Počitelj
  • Marvel at the beauty of nature at Bunski Kanal
  • Visit Herzegovina’s most photographed sight: the dervish monastery in Blagaj

And in the evening, a special treat awaits: We will visit a 4th generation boutique winery where we enjoy a barbecue dinner there and make our own wine, bottle it, cork it, and put our names on the label to take home as the perfect souvenir!

INCLUDED MEALS: BREAKFAST, DINNER

You end your trip with a special local experience in Sarajevo, an Ajvar making class. If you haven’t heard of the famous spread that is eaten and loved all over the Balkans: Ajvar is a paste made from bell peppers and eggplants, cooked until smooth and creamy. And it’s absolutely delicious! And of course a small jar will be yours to take home and introduce others to the magical spread

In the evening, you’ll celebrate the end of the trip with your fellow travelers at tonight’s farewell dinner – a traditional sač, barbecue under the bell in our own garden! Because after all, you came her as foreigners, but we are very much sure that you’ll leave as friends!

INCLUDED MEAL: BREAKFAST (EXCLUDING EARLY MORNING DEPARTURES)

Today, it’s time to say goodbye to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Or rather: See you again – because we are positive, that after this trip, you have fallen in love with this little heart-shaped country head over heels. And that in your head, you are probably already planning your trip back!
